Spousal Sponsorship

Spousal sponsorship is part of Family class immigration under this category a Canadian Citizen or Permanent resident can sponsor their spouse or common law partner for Canadian permanent residency.

There are two types of sponsorship Outland and Inland Sponsorship


1.    Outland Sponsorship

When the sponsored person spouse/common law partner lives outside Canada this option is selected. This type of application is processed by the visa office of applicant’s country of origin. The sponsor can travel out of Canada while waiting on application to be processed however the entry back in Canada is at officer’s discretion.

2.    Inland Sponsorship

When the sponsored person is living in Canada, they must have entered Canada legally. In this case sponsored person might be eligible for work permit while the application is being processed.

 

Categories

  • Spouse

Sponsor and sponsored person are legally married and have legal document to support their claim

  • Common Law Partner

Common-law relationship both parties should live together continuously for at least 1 year excluding brief absence of business or family reasons

​

  • Conjugal Partner

A conjugal partner is a foreign nation residing outside Canada who is in a conjugal relationship with a sponsor for at least 1 yea but could not live with the sponsor as a couple.


Eligibility requirements for the sponsor

  • Must be 18 years of age

  • Must be Canadian citizen or Permanent resident

  • Must not have committed any serious offense, or declared bankruptcy.

  • The sponsor must not have sponsored anyone in last 3 years or should not have been sponsored in last 5 years.

Eligibility requirements for sponsored person:

  • The sponsored person should be of legal age

  • The sponsored person should not have committed any serious offense
